THE THROMBOELASTOGRAPH IN CLINICAL PRACTICE

In the last 10 years, thromboelastography has seen a rapid growth in application to study hemostasis in many disease states in the veterinary literature. This brief review of the technology and salient literature will focus on what is currently knownin this field as it applies to veterinary internal medicine, emergency, and critical care. Although this is a valuable academic research tool to uncover questions of coagulation and hemostasis, it is not necessarily cost prohibitive. Due to its wide applicability to study all phases of the coagulation process (clot formation, strength, and fibrinolysis), thromboelastography may eventually be used in larger 24 hour, multi-specialty hospitals by internists, surgeons, and criticalists.
