COAT SCRAPIE: UPDATE COMPARISONS WITH SHEEP SCRAPIE

Scrapie is a form of a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE). Other examples of TSE's include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease in cervids, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. Scrapie is primarily a disease in sheep and does infect goats; it is not infectious to people. Research indicates scrapie was not responsible for the BSE outbreak in Great Britain that occurred in the late 1980's. The purpose of this presentation is to provide current information regarding scrapie in sheep and goats, particularly within the United States.
