FUTURE TRENDS IN TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

Prior to 1980, veterinary transfusion medicine was practiced rarely and with little or no predetermination. The early 80's saw the development of critical care specialists and commercial veterinary blood banks. Through the forethought and encouragement of early pioneers in veterinary transfusion medicine, NTH recognized the importance of funding educational efforts in this subspecialty The Transfusion Medicine Academic Awards (TMAA) included veterinarians at University of Pennsylvania, Tufts University, Michigan State University, Washington State University and Kansas State University. These unique awards allowed for the development of an educational and research process that has led to our current state of understanding in veterinary transfusion medicine. Now that veterinary transfusion medicine has become a daily tool for practicing and academic veterinarians, the question should be asked where does the next decade lead in this emerging practice area.
