Differential display and suppressive subtractive hybridisation were used to examine genetic responses of Atlantic salmon to Gyrodactylus salaris challenge. Several genes that were differentially expressed in challenged or uninfected salmon, or resistant and susceptible stocks, were identified. Full-length genes were isolated and their expression analysed in response to G. salaris infection. Some of these genes are similar to mammalian genes involved in immune responses, and their analysis provides information on the nature of resistance to G. salaris in salmon. The design of these experiments is important. The host crosses and challenges should be carefully considered, and the use of pooled or individual samples from parental or hybrid fish should also be examined to provide the optimum material for each experiment.
