Endoscopic guidelines for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer, familial adenomatous polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease and sporadic colorectal cancer

Current prevention of colorectal cancer is based largely on secondary prevention in which precancerous polyps or flat dysplasia are identified and therefore enable interventions which prevent invasive cancer and death from cancer. Existing guidelines for cancer prevention are based on our understanding of the pathogenesis of the cancer, lag time between the onset of precancerous changes and cancer, risk of synchronous and metachronous lesions, and the sensitivity of detection tools.
