Quality Environmental Management Systems in the Global Marketplace - A North American Perspective on Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility and Other 21st Century Issues

Standardization is at the heart of all we do but it is essential that the correct level of formality and structured approach exists that will encourage rather than stifle innovation, drive towards excellence of business performance rather than mediocrity. As organization of all sizes struggle with issues and regulation from government customers, societal standards, the holy grail of an simple framework application across all areas and types of business of whatever size is becoming increasingly elusive. We need a common "language" to facilitate communication and understanding, and to promote business and societal growth and improvement. As chairs of the ISO technical committees responsible for management systems standards for environmental and quality management, Dan Gagnier and Trevor Smith agree on the "common language" will review current trends in the business world and in the realm of standardization. Case study examples from Alcan and Kodak will presented by Dan and Trevor and they will discuss not only best practices but also the pitfalls to avoid.
