Synthesis of Carbazole Derivatives by Palladium Catalyzed Double N-Arylation of Amines

The double N-arylation of primary amines as well as ammonia equivalent with 2,2'-dihalobiphenyl or 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyloxy)biphenyl was investigated for the synthesis of carbazole derivatives.The synthetic utility of the double N-arylation methodology is demonstrated as the total synthesis of Mukonine,a carbazole alkaloid.Furthermore carbazole derivatives with unique structures,2,2'-dicarbazolyl-l,l'-biaryls and N-phenylaza[7]helicene,were successfully synthesized.
