Rye (S.cereale i ) is an important source of disease and pest resistance and several useM traits. Many agronomically interesting traits transferred from r>'e into wheat play an important role in wheat breeding programs. However; some resistant genesderived from rye have been overcome by constantly developing pathogenic races. A Chinese rye (S.cereale L cv. Welling) with disease resistance to wheat powdery mildew (E. graminins tritici) is exploited for wheat improvement in our research. Several wheat-tye IR addition lines with high resistance were developed for transferring new powdery mildew resistance gene from tiie Chinese rye to the current wheat cultivars and reconstruction of new IRS/IBL translocation chromosome. Rye chromosomes were identified with Giemsa C-banding technique and GISH. The resistant response to the advanced pathogenic race No. 15 and the mixing races of wheat powdery mildew in different IR addition lines showed that powder}' mildew resistance gene originated from Chinese ryecv. Welling can express under the presence or absence of IRS/lBL translocation chromosome background.; but resistance scales were different in the both backgrounds. The resistance gene was located in arm IRS. Additional effectives under the IRS/lBL wheat background were statistically analyzed.Results indicated tiiat rye Welling chromosome IR not only possessed powder}' mildew resistance gene; but also contained the genes controUing plant height and heading period. The number of grains per ear was significantly increased and weight of 1000 grains was significantly decreased in the detected IR disomic addition lines.
