Validation of molecular markers linked to two Fusarium head blight resistance QTLs in wheat.

Molecular mapping led to the identification of significant QTLs for resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) on chromosomes 3B and 5A of wheat. The aim of this work was to validate molecular markers linked to these QTLs in progenies of crosses betweenthe FHB resistant spring wheat line CM-82036 and five European winter wheat varieties. We evaluated F_(4:5) populations of recombinant inbred lines for resistance to FHB in a replicated, artificially inoculated field experiment. The lines were genotypedwith SSR markers mapping to Qfhs.ndsu-3BS and to Qfhs.ifaSA, respectively. Lines which possessed the CM-82036 marker alleles at both QTLs had on average less than half of the disease severity compared to lines with the winter wheat alleles. Marker assisted selection for FHB resistance appears efficient among progenies derived from crosses with CM-82036.
