The characteristics of the effluents from CHII bleaching process of reed KP pulp were analyzed firstly in this paper. The characteristics of the effluents indicated that the effluent was not suitable for the treatment of traditional bio-oxidation. Two kinds of advanced chemical oxidation processes UV/H_2O_2 and UV/Fe~(2+)/H_2O_2 were used for the effluent treatment in this study. The effects of H_2O_2 dosage, Fe~(2+) initial concentration, pH value and treatment time on COD and color removals were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the dosage of H_2O_2 had a remarkable influence on COD and color removals. Fe~(2+) could accelerate the decomposition of organic pollutants. When Fe~(2+) and H_2O_2 dosages were 45mgL~(-1) and 0.72g.H_2O_2(g.COD)~(-1) respectively, the CODcr and color removals were found to be 60.2% and 95.8% respectively after 60 minutes treatment by UV/Fe~(2+)H_2O_2 process. The optimum initial pH value was 2.1 for UV/Fe~(2+)H_2O_2 treatment system.
