The development of (he Modular Optoelectronic Multispectral Stereo scanner MOMS started with MOMS-01 1979 and a first experiment was flown 1983 on the shuttle mission STS-7. The experimental data of MOMS-02 acquired during the Geiman Spacelab D2 mission 1993 is used for a broad range of photogrammetric and geoscientific objectives. The simultaneous acquisition of high spatial resolution, multispectral and stereoscopic data enables a real combination of thematic and topographic information, thus considerably improving the verification and interpretation of dynamic changes of the Earth's surface by means of remote sensing. MOMS-2P 1996 will provide data in a 2 year mission on the MIR station under operational aspects. This paper gives an assessment of the MOMS-02/D2 mission, the data quality and an overview on die methodological and application-oriented investigations for various geoscientific significant areas. These data are the basis for the deployment of MOMS-02 as MOMS-2P on the Russian MIR-Station within the mission of the PRIRODA-Module 1996/98 and the possibilities of this system for future applications are shown.
