The two most revolutionary data management techniques for the geoscience researcher in the 1990s will almost assuredly be the utilization of CD-ROM technology to provide large volume, integrated thematic data sets which describe the environment, and the provision of such data via a high speed global network and related systems such as Internet and the World Wide Web. Both aspects are changing the way that many researchers are conducting their day to day activities in investigating the spatial and temporal relationships which describe Earth processes.
