THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT IN CONTINENTAL SCIENTIFIC DRILLING IN CHINA(CSDC)

Since the 90's, an encouraging achievement has been obtained in the preparation of the Continental Scientific Drilling in China(CSDC). A seminar on the key geological problems in the research of China deep geology was convened in March of 1991. The priority Project of Continental Scientific Drilling in China(CSDC) was implemented (July,1991).The concerned report was submitted (Nov.1994) and then was appraised.lt was considered that the conditions were ripe for conducting continental scientific drilling in China. We strove to get this project listed into the country's major scientific Engineering projects in China's Ninth Five-Year Plan. The State Council issued the "National Program for Medium and Long Term Scientific and Technological Development, indicating that the technical preparation should be conducted before the year of 2000 for geological scientific (ultra-deep) drilling engineering, and then geological scientific (ultra-deep) drilling project would be implemented before 2020 (Feb. 1992). The first (April, 1992) and second (May, 1993) seminar on China Continental Scientific Drilling were held . The site selection for China's scientific drilling was discussed. Twelve candidate sites were discussed, then summarized into four, and finally Dabie-Jiaonan was selected as the first target area. China National Geological Super-deep Drilling Laboratory was set up in China University of Geosciences(Beijing), and the equipment installed (May, 1993).
