According to studies of the acritarch biostratigraphy in China, the evolution of Neoproterozoic acritarchs roughly involves four stages, from older to younger, including the pre-Doushantuo Stage, the Doushantuo Stage, the Dengying Stage and the Meishucun Stage. Most of the species with large size and complex ornament structures occured in the first stage, flourished in Doushantuo stage and disappeared near the time of the main Ediacarian animal radiation. Following the early Cambrian transgression, the succedent radiation of acanthomorphic acritarchs dominated by the genus Michystridium marks the beginning of Cambrian.
