Added mass, r virtual mass, is the mass of fluid which moves with a submerged object when the object is accelerating or the fluid is accelerating around it. This concept is of interest many fields. Added mass is normally determined analytically by potential flow theory for relatively simple objects, or by experiemtal methods for more complicated objects. Even though the objects' added mass applies to an object with no other objects around it and with uniform boundary conditions, the added mass may be determined experimentally even if the object is mounted rigidly at one end. That is the subject of this paper.
