Integrating the factors of lane layout, traffic flow organization and signal control is the basic method to make full use of the time and space resources at the signalized intersections. Specifically, heavy left turning traffic at a signalized intersection always leads to much more traffic delays. In order to solve this problem, Chinese traffic engineering brings out the traffic control method of setting left-turn lane using exit lanes on urban road intersections in practice. This paper presents a systematic research on this model from three aspects of technical principle, the applicable conditions, and the application result. Through the investigation and analysis, we choose the Changchun Street-Xuanwumen West Street intersection as a typical intersection and make the detailed control scheme. And, we apply the microscopic simulation technology to evaluate the validity of this control method.
