Analysis of Resident Activity Range Based on Mobile-Phone Billing Data

Many researches on resident activity range come from traditional data collection methods such as artificial or telephone surveys, but those approaches are difficult to update, and the results are limited to a certain point in time. With the progress of mobile-phone positioning technology, mobile-phone positioning data has become a kind of economic and efficient spatiotemporal data source. In this paper, we propose a method of calculating activity-radius to measure the activity range of a mobile-phone user, by using mobile-phone billing data in the city of Shenzhen for a seven-day period. We find that the distribution of activity-radius is well approximated by a truncated power-law. The accuracy and reliability of the activity-radius based on billing data has also been analyzed. This method could provide a new idea for the real-time observation of resident activity range and could also lead to more informed decision making in both city planning and transport system planning.
