Ultimate Shear Strength of FPSO Stiffened Panels after Supply Vessel Collision

The accidental frontal collision of a supply vessel with a FPSO can leadto significant plastic deformation. This damage may have an importantinfluence on the ultimate shear strength of the platform stiffened sidepanels and should be carefully assessed. In order to investigate itseffect, a nonlinear quasi-static finite element model is presented andimplemented using ABAQUS. Geometric imperfections are introducedby considering the first buckling mode shape of the panel and adisplacement loading control is then imposed to the bulb in order toevaluate the plastic deformation and springback effect. In the finalanalysis step the ultimate shear strength is assessed considering thegeometric imperfection and the residual stresses from collision. For thecase study, a parametric variation is carried out to investigate theinfluence of bulb displacement, initial imperfection amplitudes andplate thickness.
