Umedzu Papar Mill: industrial architecture and influence of paper-making technology in the early Meiji Japan

摘要

The purpose of this paper is to make clear the architectural detail of Umedzu paper mill constructed in Kyoto in 1874, and to read it from the view point of architecture-technology relation.For the purpose of rehabilitation of Japan's old capital after the Meiji revolution, Umedzu paper mill was constructed as the first proper modern industrial project importing German machines and engineers with support of German mercantile firm in Osaka foreign settlement.The whole plan of the building, which was prepared in Germany and executed by Japanese builders, appeared U-shaped, where the paper-making process flowed on the continuous line.In addition, some architectural forms was arranged in accordance with the nature of paper-making machines and system.
