Station-Area Land Use Planning under the Integrated Framework of Public Transit and Land Use

Taking the interactions between transit and urban development into account, the station-area land use planning has been incorporated under the integrated framework of public transit and land use (PT-LU). Specifically, conventional independent study veins of various station-area land uses, e.g., transit-oriented development (TOD) and park-and-ride (PNR), are being examined under the same platform to achieve coordination and optimization. The study reviews the literature from three aspects: (i) the shortcomings of the current integrated models of PT-LU, (ii) the development of researches on TOD and PNR, respectively, and (iii) the trade-off of station-area land use between TOD and PNR facilities. It is indicated that existing PT-LU models are limited in capturing the interactions between travel system and station-area land use; and TOD and PNR planning should be systematically incorporated to optimize the system performances in terms of transit patronage increment, vehicle-traveled kilometers reduction, mobile emission alleviation, etc. Future research directions and key issues are also summarized. The results provide guidance to public transit planning and smart growth of Chinese cities, in which rapid urbanization and public transit development are witnessed.
