In most cases of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys, co-pole polarization can not be applied, because of the antenna impedance mismatch and polarization response insensitive of the cross-pole. However, the co-pole polarization mode exist large clutter and low signal-to-noise ratio because of antenna impedance mismatch and depolarization in complex media. The co-pole polarization mode is difficult to locate the target accurately. In this paper, we use both simulation and experiment to compare the responses between co-pole and cross-pole mode according to the mechanism and theory of electromagnetic wave. The results show that response of cross-pole which antennas have a 45° angle from the direction of survey line, has better effect to reduce clutter caused by antenna ring-down. And this mode greatly increases signal to noise ratio of data for the rough undulating surface and irregular targets. It shows that this mode has good detecting effect and high interpretation accuracy.
