Fluid mechanics modeling and direct thrust measurements on an 8-GHz microwave electrothermal thruster were performed. Computer modeling involved implementing 2D and 3D simulations of swirl flow dynamics and choked nozzle flow in a cylindrical cavity. These models were run in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate flow conditions in the thruster and ultimately lead to a fully integrated fluids and electromagnetic model. Experimental work involved redesign of the thruster cavity and construction and testing of a vertical thrust stand. Thrust measurements were taken using ammonia and simulated decomposed hydrazine as propellants. Testing was performed over a range of 100 to 250 W of microwave power input into the thruster.
