This paper presents a shape based level set technique to extract vascular structures in X-Ray Angiographic images. It makes use of the Mumford-Shah functional applied to images of non-uniform illumination. The shape model is computed using string matching techniques from a preliminary hierarchical multiphase method. Its performance, using different metrics, has been evaluated on a set of three angiographic image sequences by comparison with manual delineation. A sensitivity mean of 78.31 ± 3.52% and a specificity mean of 89.28 ± 1.17% were found in the quantitative validation analysis computed on all the data set.
