This paper proposes a method for quantitative integration of seismic anisotropy attributes with reservoir production data as an aid in characterizing systems of natural fractures in hydrocarbon reservoirs. This method is based on a combination of a higher-order effective medium theory (which takes into account the effects of fracture-fracture interaction) with an Ensemble Kalman Filter (data assimilation) technique (which provides uncertainties as well as mean values). An application to synthetic data suggests that one may obtain a significantly better image of the fracture density and permeability fields within a naturally fractured reservoir if one uses time lapse measurements of seismic anisotropy in addition to reservoir-performance data, in the fracture characterization (history matching) process.
