Potential Uses of Waste Paper Sludge as Roadbed Material

Waster paper sludge from the paper mill industry has in the past been a major disposal problem. However, new uses have been found for this material which make it now a marketable commodity with applications as a cover material for sanitary landfills. In addition, new uses for paper sludge have been found in the mixtures of aggregate and paper sludge to make a suitable road bed material for secondary roads and remote access roads for logging, power and similar industries needing an inexpensive and low maintenance road surface. In this paper, a review of existing published material is presented to illustrate the various mixtures used and their respective application. While much of the research and project work has been done in Europe, efforts are beginning to be made in the United States to explore this material in a beneficial reuse for many of the same applications. The material presented herein sets forth the various applications, both in design of various mixes for a particular application, but also presents various actual research and demonstration projects.
