摘要

This study has been carried out on two phenolic resin systems, an unmodified resin and one modified by a vinyl ether. The effect of incorporation has been found to give friction composites with a greater strength. This is shown to be the result of interactions between the modified resin and the glass filaments present in the reinforcing system. The friction performance of these composites has been evaluated using a pin on disc method. It has been found that for the unmodified resin a composite with 15% resin content of the unmodified resin shows the best overall performance. Further work was carried out using the modified resin at this resin content and it was found that manufacturing the composites to a lower density improved noise performance. Noise generation was found to be associated with the formation of a transfer film giving a rough surface to the counter face.
