Scanning optical microscopy and its applications to nondestructive materials testing

Abstract: In this work we discuss the applications of confocalmicroscopy to non-destructive materials testing. Afterthe introduction we briefly consider some importanttheoretical aspects of the microscope. We then move todiscuss the possible imaging modes available for bothsurface and bulk microscopy. We present experimentalimages obtained with various types of imaging modes.Finally, an experimental confirmation for thetheoretically predicted contrast mechanism isdiscussed. !8
