A number in international networks or trade associations have been launched in the arearnof Micro and Nano Technologies (MNT) during the last 10-15 years, such as MANCEF,rnNEXUS, MEMS IG, IVAM, etc. In addition, traditional engineering or manufacturers'rnorganizations like SEMI, IEEE, SPIE and others have launched specific activities torncover MNT. A third group of MNT organizations have been launched with a morernregionalational focus, very often initiated to support government strategies towardsrndissemination and technology transfer.rnAll these organizations cover different aspects based on their individual approaches andrnmotivations and the ones of their members and customer base, I.e.:rn? Industry orientation vs. research linksrn? Networkingrn? Education vs. commercializationrn? Market reports and roadmappingrn? International relations vs. local activitiesrn? Mission to support/implement government policyrn? Finance model for the organization (membership, public funding, income throughrnservices, etc.)rnThe author has compared different motivations and approaches and analyzed the role thatrnthe organizations play in the commercialization of MNT. As this work is still ongoing,rnthe complete analysis as an update to this paper will be presented at COMS 2004. Pleasernask the author for the updated paper.
