This paper presents an objective metric forrnmonochrome image quality evaluation. The human observationrnprocess is characterized as the combination of a highlevelrnprocess and a low-level process. The high-level processrnmodel captures an observer's ability to detect distortions,rnwhile the low-level process model quantifies an observer'srnresponse to detectable distortions. The proposedrnfour-stage algorithm mimics human observation, and characterizesrnresponses arising from observations of images withrndifferent distortions. Strong correlation has been obtainedrnbetween the proposed technique and subjective tests.
