For the human-biometeorologically significant assessment of the thermal component of urban climate, thermal indices, e.g. physiological equivalent temperature PET (Matzarakis et al., 1999), which are based on the human energy balance, should be applied. With respect to the air quality component of urban climate, standards for the assessment of single air pollutants exist in almost every country of the world. However, these standards are insufficient in view of the persistent demands (e.g. from urban planners) for the assessment of the air quality, which is not limited to a single air pollutant.
