Effect of Window Configurations on Fire Spread in Buildings

This paper presents a preliminary study that examines the effect of windows configurations on fire spread in buildings. Full scale model is set up for the purpose of predicting the geometry of the emerging flame and resultant heat flux exposure to the floor above. The results are based on full scale model simulation for several windows opening configurations. The model is subjected to study different heat release rate. These results are similar to other researches results.The study is carried out using Fire dynamic simulator (FDS) combined with PYROSIM and SMOKEVIEW programs. These programs, to achieve the model of compartment fire scenario require investigating and determining temperature and heating flux. The types of windows are presented (rectangle or wide window, tall window and square window). Various windows area with the same model is studied. The effect of window configurations on the fire plume projected from window opening is illustrated.
