Endothermy is the ability to generate and conserve metabolic heat to maintain body temperature above that of the surrounding environment.Endothermy enhances the physiological and ecological advantages of mammals,birds,and certain fish species.The opah,Lampris megalopsis(Lampridiformes),is the only known fish to exhibit whole-body endothermy.Currently,however,the underlying molecular mechanism for this remains unclear.Hence,the opah offers an excellent opportunity to study the evolutionary mechanism of whole-body endothermy in aquatic animals.In this study,we assembled a L.megalopsis genome(1.09 Gb in size)and performed comparative genomic analysis with ectothermic fish to reveal the genetic basis of endothermy.Based on analysis of positive selection,rapid evolution,and gene family expansion,we discovered several genes that likely contributed to thermogenesis and heat preservation.As the first reported L.megalopsis genome,our results not only clarify the possible molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in endothermic adaptation but also increase our understanding of endothermic fish biology.

Understanding how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)emerged in 2019 is critical to preventing zoonotic outbreaks before they become the next pandemic.The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan,China,was identified as a likely source of cases in early reports but later this conclusion became controversial.We show the earliest known COVID-19 cases from December 2019,including those without reported direct links,were geographically centered on this market.We report that live SARS-CoV-2 susceptible mammals were sold at the market in late 2019 and,within the market,SARS-CoV-2-positive environmental samples were spatially associated with vendors selling live mammals.

We analyzed 131 human brains (44 neurotypical, 19 with Tourette syndrome, 9 with schizophrenia, and 59 with autism) for somatic mutations after whole genome sequencing to a depth of more than 200×. Typically, brains had 20 to 60 detectable single-nucleotide mutations, but ~6% of brains harbored hundreds of somatic mutations. Hypermutability was associated with age and damaging mutations in genes implicated in cancers and, in some brains, reflected in vivo clonal expansions. Somatic duplications, likely arising during development, were found in ~5% of normal and diseased brains, reflecting background mutagenesis.

Understanding the circumstances that lead to pandemics is important for their prevention. Here, we analyze the genomic diversity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We show that SARS-CoV-2 genomic diversity before February 2020 likely comprised only two distinct viral lineages, denoted A and B. Phylodynamic rooting methods, coupled with epidemic simulations, reveal that these lineages were the result of at least two separate cross-species transmission events into humans. The first zoonotic transmission likely involved lineage B viruses around 18 November 2019 (23 October-8 December), while the separate introduction of lineage A likely occurred within weeks of this event.

Humanity is in the grip of another pandemic beyond coronavirus disease(COVID).Although it is not spreading as rapidly as the viral pandemic,it is insidious and probably presents a greater threat in the long run.Through the large-scale use of antibiotics,we have driven the emergence of antimicrobial resistance(AMR)in bacteria,and these resistant bacteria are increasing in number and prevalence,threatening our ability to treat common infections and reducing our opportunities to use other life-saving treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery.A recent study showed that bacterial AMR was associated with nearly 5 million deaths in2019,with about 1.3 million being directly attributable to resistance[1].These numbers are likely to increase.

In vivo gene editing therapies offer the potential to treat the root causes of many genetic diseases.Realizing the promise of therapeutic in vivo gene editing requires the ability to safely and efficiently deliver gene editing agents to relevant organs and tissues in vivo.Here,we review current delivery technologies that have been used to enable therapeutic in vivo gene editing,including viral vectors,lipid nanoparticles,and virus-like particles.Since no single delivery modality is likely to be appropriate for every possible application,we compare the benefits and drawbacks of each method and highlight opportunities for future improvements.

RECENTLY,the economic data with high CPI released by Europe and America in August has attracted the market’s attention.In particular,CPI in the euro zone has increased by 9.1 percent year-on-year,a record high since 1991.Though the U.S.’CPI started to fall after reaching the highest point of 9.1 percent in June,it still stood at a high level of 8.3 percent in August.The data have greatly defied people’s expectation that high inflation would disappear in the short term,and more people started to realize that prices are likely to rise.

本发明涉及光纤耦合技术领域,尤其涉及一种高效率的叠阵型半导体激光器,包括激光源、光束整形组件、会聚透镜、鲍威尔棱镜组件和光纤;所述激光源发出的光束经过光束整形组件进行整形;整形后的光束经会聚透镜会聚,会聚后光束经过鲍威尔棱镜组件进行光束整形可以耦合进光纤的光束。本发明系统结构简单,便于操作,减少了操作步骤,光纤耦合效率达到84.3%。
