    • 摘要: Human coronavirus infection getting into the brain:By February 2022,the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection,causing the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak,has infected around 415 million people,and caused~5.8 million deaths worldwide(WHO,https://covid19.who.int/).As SARS-CoV-2 replicates during the infection,it undergoes genetic mutation to generate variants with varying characteristics and mutation frequencies.The emerging,over time,new variants that differ with transmissibility,immunity,and infection severity pose continuous challenges to established COVID-19 management strategies and regulations.Several SARS-CoV-2 variants such as Omicron(B.1.1.529),Delta(B.1.617.2),UK(B.1.17),South Africa(B.1.351),Brazil(P.1),and New York B.1.525-B.1.526 were detected worldwide and accelerated severity of COVID-19 pandemic(Figure 1A;McQuaid et al.,2021).

    • 摘要: Oligodendrocyte precursor cells(OPCs)and microglia are two very fascinating cell types with a multitude of important but different functions.At a first glance,they appear not to share many cellular properties,nor are directly related to one another or derived from a common ancestor.Despite all differences,emerging data show that both cell types express the protein nerve/glial antigen 2(NG2)after pathological insults(Figure 1).For years,it remained controversial whether microglia really could express NG2 upon injury,with contradictory results reported among different disease models.Addressing this question,we could recently show by using triple transgenic knock-in mice and either an acute injury model(stab wound injury)or the middle cerebral artery occlusion combined with immunohistochemistry that a subset of microglia activates the cspg4 gene in a disease dependent manner leading to a bonafide microglia-specific NG2 protein expression besides OPCs and pericytes.Our data show that the cspg4 gene not only gets transcribed in microglia based on reporter expression after recombination,but also the protein itself is expressed(Huang et al.,2020).

    • 摘要: After injury of the central nervous system(CNS),neuronal circuits are known to remodel for functional recovery.In general,there are two strategies for the remodeling:axonal regeneration and sprouting(Figure 1A).Axonal regeneration is re-growth of injured neurons themselves,but axons hardly regenerate in the adult mammalian CNS(Silver and Miller,2004).On the other hand,axonal sprouting is new growth from intact or spared neurons to the denervated target by forming axon collaterals,compensating for damaged circuits.This process is a more effective way for circuit remodeling,as it does not necessarily require long axonal elongation.

    • 摘要: Donald Vincent Helmberger,Ph.D.and Smits Family Professor of Geophysics Emeritus at Caltech(Figure 1),one of the primary founders of seismic waveform modeling,was born on 23 January 1938 and died on 13 August 2020.Don obtained his Ph.D.in 1967 at the University of California San Diego,USA.In 1970,after a two-year appointment as a research associate at MIT and one year on the faculty at Princeton University,Don moved to the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech where he was to spend the rest of his career.

    • 摘要: The earliest use of Lycium barbarum L.(Goji fruits)as a medicinal plant was at around 2,300 years ago,and nowadays it is used as a medicinal food(Figure 1)[1,2].There have been some reports on the antifertility effects and fertility-promoting or aphrodisiac effects[3-5].The famous Chinese herbalist Li Shizhen first recorded the pro-fertility efficacy of Lycium barbarum L.in Compendium of Materia Medica in the 16th century[6].Lycium barbarum L.also has many other effects,such as the antioxidant function,anti-cytotoxicity,anti-fatty acid toxicity,neuroprotective and anticancer effects,and so on[7].Lycium barbarum L.is rich in vitamins,zeaxanthin,carotenoid and other ingredients[8].

    • 摘要: Late stage blindness and visual impairment(BVI)affects over 400 mi l l ion adul ts worldwide.These disabilities severely impact the ability of adults to function independently,reduce their quality of life,and worsen socio-economic burdens on health care systems.Importantly,the World Health Organization projects worldwide BVI from degenerated retina to more than double by the year 2050(Bourne et al.,2021).To understand the clinical problem,consider Figure 1A depicting the retina’s seven neuronal cell types that interconnect across three nuclear layers.Retinal photoreceptors of the outer nuclear layer(ONL)are light sensitive neurons that absorb and convert photons into bioelectrical signals.
