摘要: While lighting manufacturers and independent testing laboratories generally follow IES published procedures for testing luminaires under controlled laboratory conditions, measurements made in the field to confirm predicted performance can be influenced by a variety of factors. Under laboratory conditions, care is exercised in the control of the precision and accuracy of the photometric measurement conditions, including luminaire orientation, test distances, ambient temperature, electrical supply and regulation, and selection of lamps for optimal stability and arc tube geometry. In the field, this level of control and accuracy in operating and measurement conditions is seldom possible, and measurements made of installed photometric performance can deviate from predicted performance levels. This document identifies many of the potential factors that apply to outdoor HID luminaires (mercury vapor, metal halide, and high pressure sodium) and low pressure sodium lighting equipment utilizing core and coil ballasts for contemporary lamp wattage designations. This document outlines factors that can cause differences between calculated and measured illuminance and luminance values of outdoor HID and low pressure sodium lamps and luminaires. It does not offer solutions, nor does it quantify all of the possible variables that might be encountered.

摘要: Museum and art gallery lighting design differs from any other type of lighting design because museum objects are unique and many are extremely sensitive to harm from light. The key to damage prevention is environmental control: elimination of atmospheric pollution, stabilization of temperature and humidity, and minimization of exposure to radiant energy. This Recommended Practice, intended primarily for the lighting designer, provides specific standards for satisfying the special requirements of museums and art galleries. Other decision makers, such as the museum administrator, the curator, the conservator, and the exhibit designer, can use this Practice to improve understanding and communication throughout the exhibition process. This Practice covers museum and art gallery lighting from a dozen perspectives: successful museum lighting introducing the concept of team decision making; design guidelines melding artistic basics withkey technical considerations; damage to museum exhibits revealing why light causes deterioration and what can be done to minimize the effect; four typical lighting problems categorizing most display situations and the best methods to handle them; architectural aspects and daylight explaining how daylight "presence" can best be used; electric light sources describing the best and worst features of incandescent, fluorescent, and HID lights; luminaires and accessories concentrating on track lighting but also discussing recessed fixtures, pendant fixtures, and fiber optics; light controls explaining when to use manual switches or programmed systems; control of glare examining direct glare, reflected glare, and excess contrast; measurements and measuring instruments describing current techniques and equipment choices; lighting calculations presenting the accepted methodology with worked examples; and maintenance and budgets giving a comprehensive maintenance checklist and a sample database that costs out the lighting for a single large gallery. An extensive glossary defines both lighting and architectural terminology.Because museum and art gallery lighting design is attributed here to a collaboration between art and science, success depends upon team decisions. Decisions that must satisfy a diverse range of interests, expertise, and professional pride. Therefore, a systems approach to lighting design is advocated throughout this Practice. For example, artifact placement (relative to conservation needs) can greatly affect overall illumination levels, the curator's intended message, and the physical layout of the museum/gallery. Therefore, the impact of lighting on museum occupants, artifacts, and the environment must be jointly considered. [Note: RP-30-96 is a "trial use" American National Standard.]

摘要: The primary purpose of IES RP-7-17 is to serve as a guide and educational tool for the design of permanently installed lighting systems for industrial facilities. This Recommended Practice deals entirely with lighting and does not give advice on the construction of a facility. The scope of this practice covers the design of new indoor and outdoor lighting systems for new industrial facilities as well as the redesign of lighting systems in existing industrial facilities. Recommendations are based on quality lighting practices, including: the safe movement of vehicles and people, enhancing the productivity and comfort of employees, conserving energy, and minimizing maintenance. Recommended minimum maintained lighting levels and maximum uniformity ratio guidelines are provided but are subject tovariation for special circumstances when based upon sound engineering judgment. This Practice does not include all information for mixed application areas such as parking lots, offices, outdoor environments, commercial facilities, or daylighting design. For these crossover applications, the associated Recommended Practice documents should be used in conjunction with this Practice to provide the lighting recommendations. In short, this Recommended Practice will help the reader make intelligent choices to achieve the lighting goals with a minimum of expense of time and capital.

摘要: RP-28-16 is intended to increase the designers' understanding of age-related vision loss and the importanceof their design decisions that could impact the safety and independence of this growing sector of the population. In the 2007 edition, applications were primarily directed at housing and senior care facilities but in the 2016 edition, coverage has been expanded to new areas of interest including offices, hospitality, healthcare, commercial and places of assembly. RP-28-16 has also been revised to serve a wider range of users, including individuals, design professionals, owners/managers of commercial buildings, code and regulatory agencies and legislative bodies. It is well understood that healthcare costs will increase as our elderly population ages. As the United States braces for this huge economic impact, appropriate lighting and a supportive visual environment should be considered as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of falls, sleep disorders and long-term care, and therefore given a top priority by all code officials, governmental agencies and the tax-paying public.

摘要: To evaluate a broad-band optical source, such as an arc lamp, an incandescent lamp, a fluorescent lamp, an array of lamps or a lamp system, it first is necessary to determine the spectral distribution of optical radiation emitted from the source at the point or points of nearest human access. This accessible emission spectral distribution of interestfor a lighting system may differ from that actually being emitted by the lamp alone due to the filtration by any optical elements (e.g., projection optics) in the light path. Secondly, the size, or projected size, of the source should be characterized in the retinal hazard spectral region. Thirdly, it may be necessary to determine the variation of irradiance and projected radiance (see the Glossary) with distance. The performance of the necessary measurements is not an easy task without sophisticated instruments. Users should normally rely upon the expertise of manufacturers for information on lamps and lamp systems. Safety requirements and reference measurementtechniques for lamps and specific lamp systems are provided in later standards of this series (i.e., ANSI/IES RP-27.2-00/R2010 Recommended Practice for Photobiological Safety for Lamps and Lamp Systems - Measurement Techniques and ANSI/IES RP-27.3-07 Recommended Practice for Photobiological Safety for Lamps - Risk GroupClassification Labeling). Finally, there are well known optical radiation hazards associated with some lamps and lamp systems. The purpose of these standards is to inform the public and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) about potential radiation hazards that may be associated with various lamps and lamp systems. It is also the purpose of these standards to provide guidance, advice, and standard methods for evaluating and informing the user, both the public and the OEM, about the potential optical radiation hazards that may be associated with these products. This Recommended Practice covers the evaluation and control of optical radiation hazards from all electrically powered sources of optical radiation that emit in the wavelength range from 200 nm through 3,000 nm (3.0 um [micrometers]) except for light emitting diodes (LEDs) used in optical fiber communication systems and for lasers which are covered in a separate series of ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards (SeriesZ136). Federal mandatory requirements for lamps subject to specific Federal Regulations take precedenceover requirements in subsequent standards included in this series.Note 1: Units of wavelength in this document are exclusively in nanometers (nm).Note 2: Subtended angles are denoted by the full included angle, not the half angle.

摘要: This IES Recommended Practice (RP) has been prepared as a guide for the application of fixed outdoor lighting in and around the airport environment with respect to the airport's special requirements. These requirements include (but are not limited to):1. Height restrictions (such as obstructions affecting navigable airspace) as defined by the governing civil aviation authorities2. The ability to distinguish color of light for visual cues3. Light trespass that may interfere with visibility of Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) controllers or pilotsThe air traffic controllers need to see approaching aircraft and aircraft performing ground operations within the "aircraft movement area" without glare or direct or indirect light trespass. Pilots also need the ability to detect runway lighting without glare or direct or indirect light trespass.IES RP-37-15 provides guidance for dealing with the preceding considerations, while being cognizant to provide an adequate and safe lighted environment for aircraft servicing, pedestrian and vehicular movement in and around the airport environment. This document is not intended to supersede any civil aviation regulations, government regulations, occupational safety and health requirements or the authority having jurisdiction.Other IES standards provide recommended practices and design guidelines for specific outdoor lightingapplications. This document is not intended to supersede these other applicable IES RPs; rather it is intended to supplement them to meet the specific needs of the airport environment.IES RP-37-15 is to be used in conjunction with appropriate energy codes and environmental sustainable design practices in use for the facility. Recommendations within the appropriate sections are included for basic information to provide guidance of key issues for consideration. The purpose of this recommended practice is:1. Airside - Provide for adequately lighted areas where parked aircraft are safely serviced; aircraft crew and passengers safely board and deplane, and where cargo operations are conducted;2. Landside - Provide for adequately lighted access roads and parking areas for safety and security of pedestrians and vehicles;3. Adjacent Development - Provide guidance for lighting in the vicinity of the airport (including areas outside the airport property line), while also taking into account the special needs of the airport environment, such as heightrestrictions and potential light interference with air traffic controller and/or pilot vision. The scope of outdoor lighting in the airport environment includes aircraft stands and apron areas, roadways, vehicular parking facilities, passenger loading and unloading areas as well as pedestrian walkways. The recommendations included in IES RP-37-15 provide guidance for lighting of these areas while emphasizing the restrictions, regulations, and best practices for the safe movement of aircraft.IES RP-37-15 does not provide guidance for Aeronautical Ground Lighting systems, such as Runway, Taxiway and Approach Lighting, and is not intended to be used for lighting designs for Heliports (refer to Annex F - Glossary).

摘要: This approved method describes the procedures to be followed and the precautions to be observed inperforming uniform and reproducible measurements of the electrical and photometric characteristics ofgeneral service incandescent filament lamps under standard conditions.Incandescent filament lamps produce radiant power as a result of electric current passing through a tungstenfilament, which is surrounded by an inert atmosphere or vacuum within a glass or quartz envelope. Some lamps contain halogens that are employed to maintain a clean bulb wall. Such lamps may also employ bulb coatings that redirect infrared energy back to the filament for improved efficacy or to filter radiation for color control. As long as the filament remains intact, current will flow, heating the filament to incandescence. Since the desired incandescence occurs at high filament temperatures, the surface of the tungsten filament is continually vaporized during lamp operation. As a result, the filament wire diameter is non-uniformly decreased along its length until at some point, the high current density causes excessive local heating and vaporization, which causes filamentfailures. The rate of evaporation is dependent on the local filament temperature, plus gas density and pressure.Incandescent filament lamps are typically affected by variables such as operating cycle, conditions imposed by the fixture, orientation and vibration. In general, the test conditions should not diverge widely from conditions of service. Practical considerations require that any test conditions and programs be designed to give comparable results when used by various laboratories. The recommendations of this IES Approved Method have been made withthese objectives in mind.
