In response to the surface water treatment rule and the disinfection byproduct rule, the Massachusetts Water ResourcesAuthority (MWRA) initiated a pilot treatment program of its Wachusett Reservoir supply. The authority retained CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers and the University of Massachusetts for the purpose of conducting a 4-season pilot study on this water source. This paper attempts to describe the more important results regarding the removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), byproduct precursors, and assimilable organic carbon (AOC).
