Embodiments of the present invention disclose a method for determining a close contact, a terminal device, and a server, which are applied in the field of communication technology, and which can solve the problem where a method for determining a close contact does not yield a sufficiently accurate determination. The method comprises: a terminal device sends a request message to a server, the request message being used for requesting an identity identifier of a target user; the terminal device receives the identity identifier of the target user sent by the server; if an identity identifier matching the identity identifier of the target user is present among identity identifiers locally stored on the terminal device, then it is determined that a user of the terminal device is a close contact of the target user; the locally stored identity identifiers are identity identifiers of users of devices that have established short range wireless communication connections with the terminal device.
