The present invention relates to the use of potassium-binding agents formulated for elevated rate clearance of toxins, such as potassium ions, from the gastrointestinal tract without causing undesirable side effects in hemodialysis patients. The composition exhibits desirable characteristics for long-term administration to treat or prevent the recurrence or development of a given disease, eg, hyperkalemia.
