An active-source-pixel, integrated device capable of performing biomolecule detection and/or analysis, such as single molecule nucleic acid sequencing, is described. The active pixel of this integrated device includes a sample well into which the sample to be analyzed can be diffused, an excitation source for providing excitation energy to the sample well, and a sensor configured to detect emission from the sample. A sensor may include two or more segments that generate a set of signals that are attached to a sample or that are analyzed to distinguish and identify tags associated with the sample. Tag discrimination may be spectral and/or temporal based. Identification of tags can be used to detect, analyze, and/or sequence a biomolecule.
