The invention relates to a lift system (1) comprising a plurality of lanes (2VL, 2VR, 2H) which are orientated in a direction (z, y), at least one lift car (5), guide rails (22V, 22B, 22H) for guiding the lift car (5) along the lanes, at least one transfer unit (30) for transferring the lift car from one of the lanes to another of the lanes, characterised by toothed racks (23V, 23B, 23H) that are installed along the lanes, a drive (52-55) having a drive wheel (52) attached to the lift car (5), which can integrate with the toothed racks in order to apply a driving force to the lift car (5) for movement.
