A modular lifting apparatus that can be assembled about an item to be lifted such as a pallet has at least two elongate bars 10 connected and spaced apart by at least two spacers 20 and at least four end plates 30 that are fitted to ends of the elongate bars 10 using a locking mechanism. Each elongate bar 10 passes through or under an item to be lifted and projects from each end of the item to be lifted; each spacer 20 is shaped and dimensioned to have a portion (21 fig. 3D) that extends to abut the item to be lifted and prevent the spacer 20 moving along the elongate bars 10, and the spacer 20 has a pair of eyes 22, each eye receives an end of an elongate bar 10. End plates 30 fix the spacers 20 in position once fitted to the elongate bars 10. Each end plate 30 includes a means for engaging with a lifting device such as an aperture 33 or a lip or a textured surface (34 fig. 4C). End plates 30 may be fitted to the elongate bars 10 using a twist lock mechanism comprising a key (31 fig. 4C) on each end plate 30 and an opening (11 fig. 2D) at the end of each elongate bar 10. A retaining clip 40 may hold the end plate 30 in position. Each elongate bar 10 may include a node 12 to prevent spacer 20 sliding long the elongate bar 10.
