The invention relates to an adiabatic coolant for cooling below 7 K, the adiabatic coolant comprising:a compound according to formula (1): (Yb1-xAx)a(Ni1-yBy)b(C)c (1)wherein A is one or more members selected from rare earth elements other than Yb;B is one or more members selected from the group of members consisting of Al, Ga, Ge, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au;C is one or more members selected from the group of members consisting of Sn, In, Tl, Pb, and Bi;x is in the range of 0 to 0.9;y is in the range of 0 to 1 when B is one or more selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga, Ge, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Cu, Rh, Ag, Ir, and Au;y is in the range of 0 to less than 1 when B is Pd or Pt; and whereina, b and c satisfy the following conditions:a = c0.25a ≤ b ≤ 4a.
