One aspect of the invention concerns a procedure for automatically determining the display status of a traffic signalling system (3),complete the steps: recognising (21) a traffic signal system (3) in a vehicle environment (1),including a signalling superstructure of the signalling system (3);Detect (22) an electromagnetic signal emitted by the traffic signal system (3);detect (23) temporal intensity fluctuations of the recorded signal;and determine (24) an indicator status of the signalling system (3),where determination (23) depends on the detected intensity fluctuations and on a location of origin of the recorded signal relative to the signal superstructure.
