Hydrogen-storing composite material which can be reversibly transferred between a storage state and a non-storage state and optionally one or more intermediate states, the hydrogen-storing composite material being produced by processing the components of the non-storage state with one another and subsequent hydrogenation, the system comprising the components in its storage state :( a) at least one first hydride component which comprises a complex aluminum hydride MxAlyHz, the metal M being selected from the group Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Sc, Y, La, Ti, Zr and Hf, and ( b) at least one second, hydrogen-free component, which is at least one element in the oxidation state 0, selected from the group Sb, Bi, Ge, Sn, Pb, Ga, In, Tl, Se, S, Te, Br, I, Sc , Y, La, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Re, Ru, Os, Co, Ag, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Sr, Ba, Ce , Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, the at least one first hydr id component and the at least one second component are present in a first solid multiphase system, and when the system is converted into the non-storage state, the at least one first hydride component reacts with the at least one second component to form H2 in such a way that in the non-storage state at least one further hydrogen-free compound and / or alloy is formed and another solid multiphase system is created.
