A global lighting data structure (e.g., a data structure created to store global lighting information for a geometry within a scene to be rendered) is computed for the scene. In addition, a reservoir-based spatio-temporal resampling according to importance (RESTIR) is used to perform a lighting detection using the global lighting data structure. The lighting detection includes identifying light values for points within the scene, one or more points within the scene being selected based on the light values in order to carry out ray tracing during the rendering of the scene.
