According to one aspect, the present description relates to a method for monitoring the alignment of the eye (10) in an ophthalmic imaging device comprising an imaging system (101) with a given optical axis (Δ1). The method comprises forming on a detection plane (113) at least one image of at least one element (115b, 116b) located in a plane of the pupil of the eye, by means of an optical element d. 'imaging (111) comprising a given optical axis (Δ2), said detection plane being tilted such that a normal (Δ) to the detection plane forms a non-zero angle (θ) with said optical axis of the element optical imaging; determining a lateral position of the pupil of the eye with respect to an origin point (o) of a frame of reference (o, x, y, z) of the imaging system, from the position of said au minus one image; analyzing a state of focus of said at least one image, according to a direction of variation in sharpness; determining an axial position of the pupil of the eye with respect to said point of origin of the frame of reference of the imaging system, from said analysis of the state of focus.
