A method of characterizing a sample, comprising microorganisms, the method comprising obtaining images of the sample at different measurement times. From the images obtained, comparison images are formed, each comparison image corresponding to a comparison of an image obtained at a measurement instant and an image obtained at a reference instant. From the comparison images, regions of interest are determined in each image of the sample. The process involves extracting the same region of interest from multiple images to form thumbnails. Thumbnails corresponding to the same region of interest are used as input data to a supervised artificial intelligence algorithm, in order to determine the presence of growing microorganisms.
