Coastal HF radar system for tsunami warning

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coastal HF radar system for tsunami warning that estimates the height and the arrival time of a tsunami.SOLUTION: An tsunami alert is announced using a tsunami detection theory on the basis of signals of ocean surface currents received from a coastal radar system. According to the tsunami detection theory, patterns are detected that correspond to temporal, spectral, and spatial characteristics of a tsunami. In addition, in response to the tsunami alert, the height and the arrival time of the tsunami is estimated using a numerical model for near-field tsunami propagation based on the coastline geometry and the offshore bathymetry near the coastal radar system.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
