A lifting machine (10) contains a machine chassis (12), an outlet (22), which extends from the machine chassis, and a connection piece (38), which extends from the outlet to connect with a load. The machine also contains a control system (60) which determines the lifting capacity of the machine on the basis of a displacement of the connection piece caused by the load.
