An apparatus for measuring the fluorescence intensity of a sample comprising: a plurality of light sources for outputting light. The output light comprising a first peak emission wavelength within the absorbance spectrum of the sample. The output light comprising a second peak emission wavelength within the absorbance spectrum of the sample, wherein the first peak emission wavelength is different to the second peak emission wavelength. The apparatus also comprising a detector for detecting fluorescence light emitted from the sample resulting from the absorbance of the output light from the light sources. The apparatus also comprising a processor for: sending electronic control signals to the plurality of light sources to drive the light sources so that the apparatus sequentially outputs: i) a first light pulse of the first peak emission wavelength; and ii) a second light pulse of the second peak emission wavelength. The processor also for receiving electronic signals from the detector.
