3429. Harrison, R. Feb. 21. Gas -producers. - Relates to obtaining combustible gas from raw or wet peat, spent tan, or other similar moist substances. The gas is made in gas-producers, which may be used singly, or in pairs as shown. Each producer a is shaped as in Fig. 2. The fuel rests on a grate or solid hearth d, which inclines down to ash doors w. Air, or a mixture of air and steam, enters at the lower openings e to raise the fuel (which consists of the solid carbonaceous residues of the peat &c. of previous charges) to incandescence, the blow gas outlets l being open. When the temperature is raised sufficiently, a layer of the wet peat &c. is charged on to the top of the fuel through the hopper b, and air, or a mixture of air and steam, enters at the upper openings e. The valves are now set so that, in one example, the gases pass downwards through the incandescent fuel in one producer, thence through a flue m to the top of the next producer, and then downwards through the fuel in the second generator, and from that to the outlet tube g. In another example, the gases from the first generator may pass from the bottom thereof to the bottom of the second generator, and be collected from the top of the latter. Heavy oils, tar, or other hydrocarbons may be sprayed into the generators through nozzles i, but preferably, however, only through nozzles in the second generator. When one generator alone is used, the gas produced passes only through one layer of incandescent fuel, that in the same generator. An arrangement of flues and valves is described, whereby the blow gases can be collected for use, if found to contain combustible gas. Each generator must be blown up afresh after each charge of peat &c. has been gasified. If the peat &c. is more or less dry, jets of steam may be passed into the generator, either immediately above the charge or just below the top of the incandescent fuel.
